Race Across the World episode 1 2023 : A Thrilling Competition Programme

Race Across the World episode 1 2023: Five teams attempt to race 16,000 km across the second-largest country in the world, Canada. Without smartphones, internet access or credit cards, and armed only with the cash equivalent of the airfare to fly the route, their ingenuity and determination will be tested to the extreme as they race through some of the world’s most remote regions. Along the way they must visit seven checkpoints and rely on the kindness of strangers to help them reach their final destination, St John’s on the island of Newfoundland, the most easterly town in North America.

The teams set off from Vancouver on the Pacific coast and must first navigate their way north to Tlell in the Haida Gwaii archipelago. Best friends Tricia and Cathie struggle to get out of the starting point of Stanley Park. It’s straight into the deep end for brothers Marc and Michael, who barely know one another. Husband and wife Zainib and Mobeen get stranded at Whistler ski resort. Ladi tries to use the race to educate daughter Monique about the world at large, and Kevin and daughter Claudia make a decision that could impact their race dramatically.

In a frenetic race across the world, travellers can choose any route they like – but no flights or phones are allowed. On the trip of a lifetime, which pair will finish first? Race Across the World is a television show that originally aired on BBC Two in the United Kingdom. The show follows several pairs of contestants as they race each other across the world, without flying and on a limited budget. The contestants are given a starting point and a final destination, and must make their way across several countries using only ground transportation.

If you are a fan of adventure and travel, then Race Across the World is a competition programme you don’t want to miss! In this British TV show, pairs of competitors race across different parts of the world, using any means of transportation other than air travel, to reach a final destination. Let’s take a closer look at this thrilling programme.

Series and Broadcast

Race Across the World premiered in 2019, with John Hannah as the narrator. The first two series were broadcast on BBC Two, and due to better than expected viewership, the third series moved to BBC One. The show’s popularity continues to grow, and in September 2022, the BBC announced the third series, which will be set wholly within Canada.

Format

The programme’s format is simple but challenging. Competitors race to reach the final destination, and the first team to get there wins a cash prize of £20,000. The catch is that they cannot fly, and they are each given an amount of money equivalent to the price of a one-way plane ticket to the final destination. They can use this money to travel by land or by sea, pay for food and accommodation, and even work to earn more money along the way.

At the start of the race, competitors are not allowed any mobile electronic devices or credit cards. Instead, they are given a world map, a GPS device to track their progress and for safety, and a travel guide with local job adverts, in addition to the money. In every episode, the teams are given a checkpoint they have to reach, and one team may be eliminated if they come last at a pre-determined checkpoint. At each checkpoint, the racers are given a 36-hour break.

Challenges and Obstacles:

One of the things that make Race Across the World so exciting is the various challenges and obstacles the teams must face along the way. From language barriers to unexpected travel delays, the teams must use their resourcefulness and problem-solving skills to complete each leg of the race. In the latest series, we see best friends Tricia and Cathie struggle to get out of the starting point of Stanley Park, while brothers Marc and Michael barely know each other. Husband and wife Zainib and Mobeen get stranded at Whistler ski resort, and Ladi tries to use the race to educate daughter Monique about the world at large, while Kevin and daughter Claudia make a decision that could impact their race dramatically.

Production

Before the race, two assistant producers conduct a recce research trip to assess the feasibility of such a journey within the budget constraints. All likely bus and train journeys are assessed beforehand. Visas are applied for the countries along all possible routes before the race, as well as any necessary vaccinations required for entry to these countries.

During the race, each team has two film crew members who travel along with them. However, all decisions are made by the racers, and the crew cannot interfere with their choices. A director of photography travels behind the teams for additional location filming. To ensure the safety of the racers, there may be local fixers and security advisers who observe the racers from a distance, and a medical support vehicle also travels an hour behind the teams in some countries.

Conclusion

Race Across the World is an exciting competition programme that showcases the beauty and challenges of travel. It’s a test of physical endurance, mental strength, and resourcefulness. So, tune in to watch the contestants navigate different parts of the world and see who will be the first to cross the finish line!
